Over 40 guests turned up last Saturday, July 4 2026 for Bahandi’s Dula-Dula: Terracotta Clay Workshop where the artists Jana Jumalon, Hemrod Duran, Mikoo Cataylo, and Dyn Quilnet share their knowledge and skills of the medium with students and guests of Mugna Gallery.
Each artist demonstrated to their participants various forms one could make with Terracotta. Jana Jumalon and her participants created freeform sculptures and earthenware reminiscent of her artworks “Casa-Casa”. Hemrod Duran demonstrated the process of making tiles designed with patterns, 3-dimensional ornamentations, and shapes that mimic his artworks “Primitive Decision”. Dyn Quilnet demonstrated to her participants the craft of making plates using cut-out molds and a sheet of foam to form the lip of the everyday household object. The shapes and stylization of its design mirror the childlike forms reflected by her artworks “Bulan ug Bituon”. Lastly, Mikoo Cataylo and his participants tirelessly created domes decorated with their own individual designs and forms like Mikoo’s artificial coral artworks “Change”.
The day was not only filled with learning but with singing, laughter, and conversations. The goal of this workshop was to not only impart the fundamental skills to create Terracotta artworks, but to immerse the participants in a community that appreciates and loves art, culture and our history.
Join us at our second and final session of Bahandi’s Dula-Dula, where the artists will give their last demonstration of firing the artworks created in the first session. This allows our participants to be able to bring their artworks with them to their homes. At the same time, the participants will immerse themselves in conversation with the artists as we discuss the medium of terracotta, its accessibility, its culture, and its identity rooted in Negrosanon history.
